The Town of Lake Luzerne was formerly the Town of Fairfield, settled in 1770 and formed in 1772 in Washington County from the Town of Queensbury. In 1808 the name of the Town was changed to Luzerne. It was transferred to the new county of Warren in 1813 and renamed to Lake Luzerne in 1963. The Town includes the hamlet of Lake Luzerne located by a lake named Lake Luzerne.
